7 Benefits of red wine for health (and how much to drink)

Red wine has several health benefits, this is mainly due to the presence of resveratrol in its composition, a strong antioxidant that is present in the skins and seeds of the grapes that produce the wine. In addition to this, other polyphenols present in grapes, such as tannins, coumarins, flavonoids and phenolic acids, also provide health benefits.

The darker the wine, the greater the amount of polyphenols, so red wine has the best properties. The main health benefits of this drink are:

  • Decrease the risk of atherosclerosis, as it contributes to the increase of HDL (good cholesterol) levels and inhibits the oxidation of LDL (bad cholesterol) in the arteries;
  • Decrease blood pressure, by relaxing the blood vessels;
  • Prevent cancer, due to its antioxidant properties that fight free radicals;
  • Prevent thrombosis, strokes and cerebrovascular accidents, for being antioxidant, inhibiting platelet aggregation and for its antithrombotic action;
  • Decrease the risk of heart problems, such as the occurrence of a heart attack, by fighting cholesterol, lowering blood pressure and fluidifying the blood;
  • Improve digestion, as it increases the production of gastric juice, stimulates the gallbladder and improves the digestion of carbohydrates.
  • In addition to this, being rich in antioxidants it also provides anti-inflammatory action and prevents damage caused by free radicals to cells, preventing the emergence of chronic diseases and early aging.
