Valerian Tea for Anxiety (and other techniques)

Valerian tea is an excellent choice to treat mild to moderate anxiety, since this plant -whose scientific name is Valeriana officinalis- has sedative and calming properties, which help to avoid stress.

This tea can also be used to facilitate the reconciliation of sleep and relieve physical and mental tension after a hard day’s work. To achieve this, the tea should be drunk at least 30 minutes before bedtime, as it may cause mild agitation before initiating its relaxing effect.

Valerian Tea for Anxiety (and other techniques)

This tea should be avoided during pregnancy and by children under 3 years of age. Also, do not exceed 2 cups of tea per day, as it could have the opposite effect, causing agitation and insomnia.

Ingredients

  • 10 g of valerian root;
  • 500 cc of water.
  • How to prepare

    Place the ingredients in a pot and boil for 10 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes, strain and drink 2 cups per day. If ingested to treat insomnia, the tea should be taken at least 30 minutes before bedtime. 

    How valerian works

    Although the mechanism of action of this plant is not fully known, many studies indicate that valerian causes an increase in GABA levels in the body. 

    GABA is an important neurotransmitter, whose function is to regulate the nervous system, calming and combating anxiety. In this way, valerian can have an effect similar to that of some medications used to treat cases of anxiety, such as Alprazolam or Diazepam.

    As well as valerian, other foods and herbs have calming properties, so they could also be used for anxiety control:

    Other techniques to combat anxiety

    To increase the effect of valerian tea, some tips to relieve anxiety are:

  • Stay in a quiet place without noise;
  • Listen to relaxing music;
  • Breathe deeply, concentrating only on breathing;
  • Avoid thinking about personal problems;
  • Use an anti-stress ball.
