Home Remedies To Relieve Chikungunya Symptoms

Echinacea, feverfew and ginseng teas are good examples of home remedies that can complement the medical treatment of chikungunya, as they help strengthen the immune system, in addition to relieving some typical symptoms of the infection, such as headache, fatigue or muscle aches.

Echinacea tea (Echinacea purpurea) is excellent for strengthening the person’s defense system; to prepare it, add 1 tablespoon in 150 mL of boiling water, let it steep for 3 to 5 minutes, strain and drink warm 3 times a day. 

2. Decrease fever

Drinking a warm tea prepared with willow leaves (Salix alba) helps to reduce fever, as this medicinal plant promotes sweating, which naturally lowers the body temperature. 

To prepare this tea correctly, one teaspoon of the dried leaves should be used in 150 mL of boiling water, let it steep for 5 minutes, strain and drink every 6 hours. 

3. Combat muscle and joint pain

An excellent natural strategy to combat the pain caused by chikungunya, is to use compresses of chili powder (red or cayenne pepper) or camphor (Cinnamomum camphora), or rubbing essential oil of hypericum (St. John’s wort) in the parts that present more pain. 

For compresses, a strong tea should be brewed and allowed to cool. Then wet a clean gauze and apply to the region, leaving it on for 15 minutes. 

4. Relieve headache

Rubbing the forehead or back of the neck with 2 drops of peppermint essential oil can relieve headache pain. Dried willow extract can also be purchased and taken as directed on the package. 

Feverfew tea (Tanacetum vulgare) is also very indicated; to prepare it it is necessary to place 1 teaspoon for each 150 mL of hot water. Let it warm, strain and drink 2 times a day. Another option is to drink 1 capsule of tansy a day. 

5. Fight fatigue and exhaustion

Some good natural options to improve disposition, fight fatigue and reduce exhaustion typical of the disease, is to use ginseng, guarana powder or mate.

6. Relieve nausea and vomiting

Ginger tea with chamomile fights nausea and vomiting, exerting a prolonged effect; to prepare it is necessary to boil 150 mL of water with 1 cm of ginger root and then add 1 teaspoon of chamomile flowers. Drink 3 times a day. 

7. Cease diarrhea

In addition to drinking rice water, you can drink a cinnamon stick tea, which thanks to its properties prevents diarrhea. Just boil a cinnamon stick in 200 mL of water for 10 minutes and drink still warm 2 times a day.

To combat more than one symptom it is possible to mix the teas, using the proportions indicated and then drink it. However, if there is worsening of fever or other symptoms arise that were not there before, such as tingling, chest pain or frequent vomiting, one should return to the doctor, as these symptoms may indicate aggravation of chikungunya and hospitalization may be necessary. 

Pregnant women and children should only use these home remedies under the knowledge of a physician.
