Home Remedies For Cough In Pregnancy

A good home remedy to combat cough with phlegm in pregnancy is honey syrup with ginger and lemon, since honey soothes the throat region, relieving cough, ginger has anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties that facilitate the exit of phlegm, and lemon is rich in vitamin C that improves the body’s defenses and helps fight infections.

Cough remedies in pregnancy should be avoided, however, if they are necessary, they should always be indicated by the obstetrician, since most medications are not safe to use in this phase due to the lack of scientific evidence, since it is not known if they can cross the placenta and affect the baby.

1. Ginger, honey and lemon syrup

Home Remedies for Cough in Pregnancy

Ginger has anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties that facilitate the elimination of phlegm, and lemon is rich in vitamin C, which improves the body’s defenses and helps fight infections.

Ingredients

  • 5 tablespoons of honey;
  • 2 cm of ginger;
  • 1 lemon with peel;
  • 1/2 glass of water.
  • How to prepare

    Cut the lemon into cubes, cut the ginger into slices and place them in a pot together with the other ingredients. Bring it over medium heat until it starts to boil, cover and let it cool. Strain and take 1 tablespoon 2 times a day.

    Although there is some controversy surrounding the use of ginger, there are no studies that prove its negative effect on pregnancy, there are some studies that indicate that it is safe. However, the ideal is to avoid consuming more than 1 gram of ginger root per day for 4 days in a row. In this case, the syrup contains 1 gram of ginger, but that is divided over time.

    2. Onion and honey syrup

    The resins that the onion releases have expectorant and antimicrobial properties, and as for the honey it helps to keep the throat hydrated to facilitate the expectoration outflow.

    Ingredients

  • 1 large onion;
  • Honey.
  • How to prepare

    Chop a large onion into thin strips, place in a pot and cover with honey. Cover and bring to a simmer for about 40 minutes. Let cool and store in a glass bottle in the refrigerator. You can take 1/2 or 1 teaspoon every 15 to 30 minutes until the cough subsides.

    3. Thyme and honey syrup

    Thyme helps to eliminate expectoration and relax the respiratory tract and honey also helps to preserve the syrup and soothe the irritated throat.

    Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp dried thyme;
  • 250 mL honey;
  • 500 mL water.
  • Method of preparation

    Boil the water and add the thyme, cover and let stand until cool, strain and add the honey. If necessary, you can heat the mixture to help dissolve the honey.

    In addition to these home remedies, the pregnant woman can also perform nebulizations by inhaling steam and drinking hot drinks with a little honey. In addition to this, she should also avoid places that are cold, heavily polluted or have dust in the air, because these factors tend to worsen the cough.

    If the cough does not pass or is relieved around 3 days or other symptoms such as fever, sweating and chills are present, the pregnant woman should inform the obstetrician, because they may be signs of complications, such as an infection, and it may be necessary to take antibiotics prescribed by the doctor.
