Gargling To Treat An Inflamed Throat

Gargles made with warm water and salt, baking soda, vinegar, chamomile or arnica are excellent for soothing an inflamed throat because they have bactericidal, antimicrobial and disinfectant action, helping to eliminate microorganisms that can aggravate inflammation.

In addition to this, they also help to complement the treatment for sore throat, which can be done with anti-inflammatory drugs prescribed by the doctor, such as Ibuprofen or Nimesulide. Teas and juices can also serve as home remedies, see some teas and juices for sore throat.

Gargling to treat an inflamed throat

See below how to prepare some solutions for gargling to soothe swollen throat:

1. Warm water and salt

Add 1 tbsp of salt in 1 glass of warm water and mix well until the salt is diluted. Then gargle for as long as possible, spitting out the water afterwards. Repeat the procedure 2 more times.

2. Chamomile tea

Add 2 teaspoons of chamomile leaves and flowers in 1 cup of boiling water, and keep in a covered container for at least 10 minutes. Strain and then you should gargle for as long as possible, spitting out the tea and repeating two more times. It is recommended to make a fresh tea each time you are going to gargle.

3. Baking soda

Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1 cup of warm water, mix well until the baking soda is completely dissolved. Give a drink, gargle as long as possible and spit out, repeating 2 times in a row.

4. Apple cider vinegar

Add 4 tablespoons vinegar and 4 tablespoons water in 1 cup, gargle for as long as possible and then spit out the solution.

5. Peppermint tea

Peppermint is a medicinal plant that contains menthol, a substance with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral properties that can help soothe a sore throat, as well as help treat a possible infection.

To use this gargle, you should prepare a peppermint tea by adding 1 tablespoon of leaves with 1 cup of boiling water. Then let it steep for 5 to 10 minutes and when lukewarm, use the tea to gargle throughout the day.

6. Arnica tea

Place 1 teaspoon of dried arnica leaves in 1 cup of boiling water and leave covered for at least 10 minutes. Strain and gargle for as long as possible, then spit out the tea. Repeat 2 more times.

When and who can do them

The gargling indicated here should be done at least 2 times per day, as long as the symptom persists. If you notice that you have pus in your throat it may be more difficult to gargle and in that case the ingestion of antibiotics is the most advisable, always under medical guidance.

Children under 6 years of age may not be able to gargle properly, running the risk of swallowing the solution, thus increasing discomfort, so it is not recommended for children under 5 years of age. Elderly and people with difficulty swallowing may also have this difficulty, so gargling is contraindicated for them.
