Chamomile tea: what it's good for, properties and how to prepare it

Some of the benefits of chamomile tea are to help fight poor digestion, relieve stress and reduce anxiety. This tea can be prepared using the dried flowers of the plant or using the sachets purchased in supermarkets. 

Chamomile tea can be prepared only with this medicinal plant or by combining several plants, such as anise and mint. The scientific name of chamomile is Matricaria recutita, also known as German, sweet or Maroon chamomile.

    Recipes with chamomile tea

    Teas can be prepared using only dried chamomile flowers or blends made with other teas, according to taste and intended benefits. 

    1. Calming and relaxing tea

    Dried chamomile tea has relaxing and mildly sedative properties that help treat insomnia, anxiety and nervousness. This tea can also help reduce cramps and spasms during menstruation. 

    Ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons dried chamomile flowers;
  • 1 cup of water.
  • How to prepare:

    In 250 ml of boiling water add the teaspoons of tea. Cover and let steep for about 10 minutes and strain before drinking. It should be taken 3 times a day, and if necessary it can be sweetened with a teaspoon of honey. 

    In addition to this, to increase the relaxing and sedative effect a teaspoon of dried catnip can be added and according to pediatrician’s indication this tea can be used by babies and children to reduce fever, anxiety and nervousness.

    2. Tea to treat poor digestion and combat gas

    Chamomile tea with anise and marshmallow root has anti-inflammatory action and calms the stomach, helping to reduce gas, acidity in the stomach and regularize the bowel. 

    Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon dried chamomile;
  • 1 teaspoon anise seeds;
  • 1 teaspoon yarrow;
  • 1 teaspoon chopped marshmallow root;
  • 1 teaspoon filipendula;
  • 500 ml boiling water.
  • How to prepare:

    To 500 ml of boiling water add the mixture and cover. Let it steep for about 5 minutes and strain before drinking. This tea should be drunk 2 to 3 times per day or whenever necessary. 

    3. Chamomile tea to refresh tired and puffy eyes

    Chamomile tea with crushed fennel seeds and Elderflower when applied to the eyes help to refresh and reduce puffiness. 

    Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon of dried chamomile;
  • 1 tablespoon of crushed fennel seeds;
  • 1 tablespoon of dried elderflower;
  • 500 ml of boiling water.
  • Mode of preparation:

    To 500 ml of boiling water add the mixture and cover. Let it steep for about 10 minutes, strain and place in the refrigerator.

    This tea should be applied to closed eyes using a moistened flannel for 10 minutes, whenever necessary. In addition to this, this tea can also be used to help treat vaginal infections to soothe and reduce skin inflammation in cases of irritation, eczema or insect bites or also to treat psoriasis. 

    4. Chamomile tea to soothe sore throat

    Chamomile tea can also be used to help soothe sore, irritated and inflamed throat, due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

    Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon of dried Chamomile flowers;
  • 1 cup of boiling water.
  • How to prepare:

    Add chamomile to 1 cup of boiling water and let steep until cool. This tea should be used for gargling. In addition to this, you can also be used to facilitate the healing of gingivitis and stomatitis. 

    5. Tea to calm motion sickness

    Chamomile tea with raspberry and peppermint helps relieve nausea and motion sickness.

    Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon dried chamomile;
  • 1 teaspoon dried peppermint or Raspberry mint leaves;
  • 1 cup boiling water.
  • How to prepare:

    6. Tea to relieve symptoms of flu and common cold

    Chamomile tea helps relieve symptoms of sinusitis, flus, colds and inflammation in the nose, due to its properties that cause inflammation to decrease. 

    Ingredients:

  • 6 teaspoons of dried chamomile leaves;
  • 2 liters of boiling water.
  • How to prepare:

    Add the dried flowers to 1 to 2 liters of boiling water, cover and let steep for about 5 minutes. The steam from the tea should be inhaled deeply for about 10 minutes and for best result you should place the face over the bowl and cover the head with a large towel. 

    In addition to this chamomile can be used in other forms besides tea, such as in the form of cream or ointment, essential oil, lotion or dye. When used in cream or ointment form chamomile is an excellent choice for treating some skin problems such as psoriasis, helping to cleanse the skin and reduce inflammation.
