5 Teas For Urinary Tract Infection

The use of teas is a good way to complement the treatment of urinary tract infection, as they can enhance the effect of prescribed medications, and relieve symptoms more quickly.

However, teas should never replace the physician’s guidance, especially when under antibiotic treatment.

In addition to this, uva ursi or bearberry has diuretic action, helping to eliminate more urine during the day, keeping the urinary tract cleaner and free of microorganisms.

Ingredients

  • 3 g of dried uva ursi leaves;
  • 200 mL of cold water.
  • How to prepare

    Add the leaves to the water and let stand for 12 to 14 hours, in a covered container and protected from light. Strain the mixture and drink up to 4 cups per day. The ingredients presented generally serve to prepare a cup of tea, increase the amounts to prepare enough for 1 day.

    Warning: uva ursi can cause some cases of intoxication, so it should be consumed in moderation, and it is recommended to do the treatment only during the crisis of symptoms and for a maximum of 7 days. In case of symptoms such as nausea or vomiting, its consumption should be suspended.

    2. Hydrastis

    Hydrastis is another scientifically proven plant, which can help treat cases of urinary tract infection, as it is rich in substances such as hydrastine and berberine, which have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory action, in addition, there are studies that say that berberine, can prevent some bacteria, especially Escherichia coli get attached to the walls of the urinary system, being easier to eliminate them.

    Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of hydrastis root powder;
  • 250 mL of boiling water.
  • Method of preparation:

    Place the ingredients in a cup for 10 to 15 minutes and mix. Then strain, let cool until lukewarm and consume 2 to 3 times per day.

    Hydrastis powder for making tea can be difficult to find and therefore, this plant can be used in the form of liquid extract of the root, and 1/4 teaspoon per day, or according to the directions on the package. Another way to consume it is in capsules, being in these cases indicated to consume 450 mg 2 to 3 times per day.

    3. Corn hairs

    Corn hairs tea is another of the most used home remedies to treat urinary system problems, where urinary tract infection is included. After some studies, it was found that this tea has good concentrations of tannins, terpenoids and alkaloids, which give it good antimicrobial properties.

    Likewise, corn silk tea is also a diuretic, which facilitates the elimination of microorganisms from the urinary system.

    Ingredients

  • 1 handful of dried corn hairs;
  • 1 cup of boiling water.
  • How to prepare:

    Place the corn hairs along with the water in a cup and wait for 5 to 10 minutes. Then strain, let it cool until lukewarm and drink 2 to 3 times a day.

    4. Dandelion

    Dandelion is a plant with excellent diuretic action that helps increase the amount of urine, allowing faster elimination of bacteria that cause urinary tract infection.

    Ingredients

  • 15 g of dandelion leaves and roots;
  • 250 ml of boiling water.
  • How to prepare

    5. Horsetail

    Horsetail is one of the best known natural diuretics around the world, for this reason it is a good ally in the treatment of urinary tract infection, as it facilitates the elimination of microorganisms responsible for the infection. According to research, the action of horsetail is related to the presence of an important diuretic substance called equisetonin.

    Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of horsetail;
  • 1 cup of boiling water.
  • How to prepare

    Put the ingredients together in a cup and let stand for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, strain, let it cool until lukewarm and drink up to 3 cups per day.

    Important care when using teas

    The use of teas or any other natural product to treat health problems, should always be guided by a doctor or a health professional specialized in the use of medicinal plants. Since the doses need to be well adapted to factors such as age, weight and health history of the person.

    Also, pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under 3 years of age, should avoid the use of any type of tea without the knowledge of the obstetrician or pediatrician.

    As most of the indicated teas have diuretic action, it is very important that their use is not done for very long periods, usually more than 7 days, as there may be a significant imbalance of minerals in the body.
