5 Home Remedies For Tonsillitis

1. Gargle with warm water and salt

The temperature of the water is also important, as using very hot or cold water can make a sore throat worse. 

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of salt;
  • ½ glass of warm water.

    Mix the salt in the glass with water until it is completely dissolved and the mixture is clear. Then, place one or two sips in the mouth, tilt the head back and gargle for about 30 seconds. When finished, pour out the water and repeat until the mixture is finished. 

    This technique is widely used to quickly reduce pain and can be performed up to 4 or 5 times a day. 

    2. Peppermint oil intake

    Peppermint essential oil has several health benefits, including its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral action. Thus, this oil can be of great help in the treatment of tonsillitis, as it reduces inflammation and relieves pain, as well as eliminates excess viruses and bacteria that may be causing the infection. 

    However, to perform the intake of this oil, it is very important to dilute it in another vegetable oil, such as olive oil or coconut oil, for example; to avoid causing some kind of burn in the esophagus. Ideally, essential oils should only be ingested under the guidance of a professional in the area, since not all can be safely consumed.

  • 2 drops of peppermint essential oil;
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil (olive, coconut or sweet almond oil).
  • How to use

    Mix the essential oil into the tablespoon of vegetable oil and then ingest. This home remedy can be used up to 2 times a day. Higher doses should be avoided, as excessive use of this oil may cause toxic effects. 

    Since it needs to be ingested, it is also important to choose an essential oil of organic origin and cold pressed to reduce the chances of ingesting any chemicals.

    3. Chew a piece of garlic

    Chewing a piece of garlic is another very effective home way to help in the treatment for tonsillitis, since garlic, when chewed, releases a substance known as allicin, which has a strong antimicrobial action, which helps fight various types of infections.

  • 1 clove of garlic.
  • How to use

    Peel the garlic clove and then cut a piece. Place it in the mouth and suck or chew to release the allicin-rich juice. 

    Since chewing garlic causes bad breath, it is advisable to brush your teeth afterwards to mask the odor. Another option is to add raw garlic to your diet. 

    4. Gargle with baking soda

    Another home remedy for tonsillitis is to gargle with warm water and baking soda. This is thanks to the fact that baking soda also possesses antimicrobial action, which helps clear the throat and treat the infection. 

    In fact, baking soda can be used together with salt for even stronger action. 

    Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda;
  • ½ glass of water tibia.
  • How to use

    Mix the baking soda in water. Place a sip in the mouth, tilt the head back and gargle. When finished, pour the water and repeat until the mixture is finished. 

    This technique can be done several times a day or every 3 hours, for example. 

    5. Fenugreek tea
