What types of green tea exists and what are their benefits?
There are different types of green tea , produced from different plant varieties. The most popular green teas are those made from the camellia sinensis plant, which includes the familiar China green teas and Formosa oolong tea , as well as Gyokuro (Japan), Gunpowder (China), Hōjicha (Japan), Sencha and Bancha (both Japan). All of them fall under the category of “Camellia Sinensis”.
But, what is the difference between these green teas? What are their beneficial properties and should I be drinking them in different ways throughout the day?

The water temperature of steeping also differs according to the types of green tea . For example, Gunpowder green tea requires 85 degrees Celsius , while Hōjicha should be brewed at 70 degrees Celsius. Also a special type of Japanese teapot is required for brewing Gyokuro leaves; by simply pouring hot water into it, you will get an amazing cup of this Japanese tea . (In case you’re wondering what Gyokuro tastes like, just imagine very sweet spinach.)
Benefits of these types of teas varies from type to typeGunpowder green tea does not contain caffeine , while Japanese gyokuro contains lots of it . Hōjicha has a similar amount ofcaffeine as black coffee , so this type of Japanese tea should be enjoyed in moderation by those who wish to keep their energy levels stable throughout the day without caffeine highs and crashes.
There is also something called matcha (抹茶) used in various culinary creations, but I won’t get into that here. In conclusion, teas are an aspect of Japan that can be explored and enjoyed for many years to come!
